Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and enjoyed the lovely weather, and it was great to see Canowindra benefiting from all the activities over the holidays including Anzac Day and the Balloon Festival. Thank you to all the students and staff who marched in both events. You were all amazing and represented our school with pride.
A huge thank you to Canowindra PS P&C for organising a great trivia night during the Balloon Festival. There were over 180 people in attendance, great prizes to be won and lots of people having a great time using their “grey matter”, some better than others! Thanks to Suzie Nash for being MC, who did a fantastic job keeping everyone on task and providing us all with a few laughs. Well done to all involved, it was a huge success.
It was great to see all students return to school yesterday after 2 weeks off school. Staff participated in a Staff Development Day on Monday. The Department of Education mandated a day of professional learning on the new school curriculum. Our executive staff presented several suites of learning on the new curriculum which was very well received by staff.
We also have a busy start to the term with Boys to the Bush, School Anzac Service, “Upstage”, Mother’s Day Stall and Rugby 7s, all in the first two weeks of school. Please check Sentral Parent App for all upcoming events and information.
Since our Before and After School Care (BASC) did not come to fruition I have been working in the background with DoE Schools Infrastructure Unit to see if they can coordinate a local provider. The next step is to gauge potential numbers. If you are interested in BASC could you please complete the survey via this link:

Fingers crossed the Primary Athletics carnival will go ahead on Friday. A notification will be sent out via the Sentral app if there are any changes due to weather. The carnival will only include the running events, all field events will be held at school during Friday sport.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker

Kindergarten - Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)
Our school will take part in the AEDC between May and July this year. The AEDC is a national census that is conducted every three years by the Australian Government, in partnership with state and territory governments. It measures how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is voluntary and it does not measure how well children are doing at school, nor how their school compares to other schools. Instead, it shows how children are growing and progressing in five key areas, what is being done well and what can be improved. AEDC data is used by schools, early childhood organisations, researchers and governments to help plan and improve services and supports for children and families. This is why it is important for all children in their first year of school to be included in the AEDC. You can learn more about the ways AEDC data is used at https://www.aedc.gov.au/.
What does this mean for your child?
The AEDC is completed by teachers based on their knowledge of the children. Children do not need to do anything to be included in the census and will attend class as usual while the census is conducted. The census will start on 6th May 2024.
Teachers will answer questions about the five key areas of early childhood development, which are: physical health and wellbeing, emotional maturity, social competence, language and cognitive skills (school-based), and communication skills and general knowledge. You can see all the questions at https://www.aedc.gov.au/avedi.
You can be confident that your child’s privacy will be protected.
We understand how important it is to keep your child’s information private. This is why the AEDC uses a secure website to collect and keep their information.
More information about how AEDC data (including your child’s information) is collected, protected and used is in the Fact Sheet.
What do parents need to do?
For the purposes of the AEDC, the Australian Government Department of Education seeks your consent to collect personal information about your child from our school. This includes known information about your child’s health.
If you consent to the collection of your child's information, you do not need to do anything.
If you do not consent to the collection of your child's information, please contact the school before Monday 6th May, and no information about your child will be collected.
School ANZAC Day Service
All parents/ carers are invited to attend. Our school captains will be conducting the service and SRC representatives will be laying the wreaths.
Over 60 CPS students proudly represented our school at the 2024 Canowindra ANZAC DAY march and ceremony during the school holidays. Thank you to the students, staff and families for helping us honour ANZAC Day and pay tribute to the service men and women who have made and continue to make sacrifices for us. - Lest We Forget -

At the end of last term, all Year 6 students spent the day at Moorbel Hall for Peer Support training. We had a fabulous day completing a variety of activities that promoted team work, leadership and problem solving. Our Year 6 students now lead a group of students each Thursday to build strong relationships and foster a sense of belonging across our school.

Aurora applications now open - Year 5 2025
Applications for Year 5 opportunity class placement in 2025 open 4 April and close 20 May 2024. Opportunity classes are an important way for us to support high-potential and gifted students. It's important we let parents and carers know they need to apply for Year 5 opportunity class placement while their children are in Year 4. The tests will be held in designated government high school test centres or other facilities. Please see additional information below.
The Resilience Project
Working on gratitude helps us to be thankful and appreciate what we have in our lives, rather than focusing on what we don’t have or what we want. When we practise being grateful, we start to scan the world to look for positives – this only takes 21 days! Practising gratitude every day increases our levels of energy, and helps us to feel happier and more focused, determined and optimistic. It even helps us have better sleep, lowers levels of anxiety and depression and we are less likely to get sick. So many benefits – let’s all try to be grateful for the things and people in our lives every day!
Whole Family Activity:
Gratitude Scavenger Hunt
- As a family create a scavenger hunt list of things that make you happy or you are grateful for, you can make your own list or use the examples below:
- Something that makes you happy
- Something you love to smell
- Something you enjoy looking at
- Something that is your favourite colour
- Something you like in nature
- Something that is useful for you
- Each member of the family uses the list and has to find as many things as they can.
- You can hunt for things inside or outside, or both. You can hunt for real things, or you can also do this using magazines or pictures from the internet.
- After a set amount of time hunting, come back together, have a look at what each person collected and let them explain why they are grateful for each item.
Family Habit Builder:
Every night at dinner, have each person talk about their favourite thing about that day.
