Week 5 Term 2 Newsletter 2024
Principal's Message
This week we will be celebrating National Reconciliation Week. ‘Now More Than Ever’ is the theme for this year’s NRW, which is a time to learn, reflect and take action to create a more just and inclusive Australia. Together we acknowledge the unique histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Congratulations to our public speakers who have been selected to represent our school at Orange’s CWA Public Speaking Competition this week. The following students will be representing our school – Talesin Bullock, Ruby Harris, James Morrow and Emily Bullock. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students and I'm sure they will be just as confident as they were in front of our school. Good luck everyone!
The last session of Boys to the Bush was held yesterday. The eight boys have had an absolute blast and thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the program. In Term 3, all our Year 5 & 6 students (boys and girls) have been invited to a Boys to the Bush Engagement Day. More information will be sent out closer to the date.
I’d like to welcome Miss Annika Benjafield who is filling in for Ms Laurie while she is taking 2 weeks leave. Annika has been working casually at our school since returning from overseas travels at the beginning of the year. Annika will also be filling in for Mrs Swords who will be taking some time off in Term 3 to do some travelling as well.
A friendly reminder for all Year 5 parents to give permission for the Canberra excursion and finalise payment. This needs to be completed by the end of the week. If you are having any issues with payment, please contact me as soon as possible to put a payment plan in place. This is a wonderful excursion, and all students will be given the opportunity to attend.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker

Science Day
Excitement is building as the our CPS Super Science Day is only 2 weeks away. Celebrating National Science week, a little early this year, we have a day full of wonderful science experiments and investigations planned. Students will have the chance to do 3 different activities with different teachers throughout the day, however the most exciting part our our day will occur in the hall when we get to experience the amazing Jolly Bops Science Show. There will be an infants show and a primary show, where our 2 visiting scientists will be wowing us with their colourful, explosive, shattering, fizzy, bright, oozy and awesome experiments. We Can Not Wait!
SRC - Lose Your Locks Fundraiser
As of Friday last week, the SRC have raised $1780 for The Kids Cancer Project. Thank you for your donations! This amount means Mrs Hawker and Ms. Laurie will be colouring their hair in the coming weeks. Mrs Swords locks are safe at the moment!
Dance Eisteddfod
On Wednesday 22nd May, 49 dance students travelled via bus to the Cowra Civic Centre to perform in the Cowra Eisteddfod.
The Stage 2 group performed to the song “Try Everything” and the Stage 3 group performed to “Say So”. Both groups showcased their dance skills on stage in front of a large audience with both groups receiving Highly Commended with a score of 82 points awarded in the section. Following this the students then performed again at Holman Place Public School where they also had lunch and interacted with the students. Thank you to Alikinetic for allowing us to use the amazing costumes these were acknowledged in our feedback from the judges.

Our Learner Qualities
The Resilience Project - Empathy
Working on empathy helps us to identify, understand and feel what another person is feeling. When we show empathy or we do something kind for someone else our brain releases oxytocin. This leads to increasing our self-esteem/confidence, energy levels, positivity and overall happiness.
Whole Family Activity:
Neighbourhood Kindness Challenge
As a family, choose an act of kindness from the list below that you would like to do for a neighbour or family friend. Each family member can select one to commit to, or you can choose to do one together.
- Cook them something delicious like a cake, hot bread, or cookies.
- Write a note to put in their letterbox thanking them for being a great neighbour or friend.
- Design them a Thank You card.
- Pick or buy some flowers to deliver to them.
- Choose a little plant from your garden to give them.
- Make them a gift from things around your house.
- Offer to do a job for them, like wash their car or water their garden.
- Offer to take their pets for a walk.
- Invite them over for afternoon tea.
- Invite them on a walk.
- Recommend one of your favourite books to borrow and read.
- Ask them if they need anything from the shops next time you buy groceries.
- Say hello next time you see them, and ask them how their day is going.
Feel free to do more than one and spread the kindness even further!
Report back to each other in one week and share how your acts of kindness were received, and how doing them made you feel.
Family Habit Builder:
Every night at dinner, have each person thank another family member for something they’ve done or said today, or give another family member a compliment.
