Principal's Message

Dear Parents and Carers,
What a delightful week it has been with the sun shining after some gloomy days over the weekend!
Last week, our Year 5 students had an amazing adventure in Canberra, and I had the pleasure of joining them for the first time in six years. The trip was filled with wonderful sights, great company, and beautiful weather. A heartfelt thank you to Miss Dixon and Miss Smith for dedicating their time to make this overnight excursion possible. We truly appreciate your commitment!
Our talented girls performed at the Western Dance Festival in Bathurst last night, showcasing the dance they previously presented at the Cowra Eisteddfod. They represented our school beautifully with a polished and well-rehearsed performance, and it was wonderful to hear about their enjoyment on stage. Special thanks to Miss Lander and Miss Smith for accompanying the girls for this event—we can’t wait to see the recorded performance on Friday!
Additionally, one of our school chess teams has been competing in Orange this week. I’m thrilled to report that all the students have been playing exceptionally well and soaking up this valuable experience. A big thank you to Mr. Bates for coordinating and coaching our students, and to all the parents for facilitating their travel.
I’d also like to extend my gratitude to Miss Dixon and the primary staff for organising our athletics field events last Friday. The students had a fantastic time as they rotated through the various field events. Be sure to check the newsletter for the full report, including our age champions in athletics!
This week, our PSSA Boys’ Soccer team faced a tough match in Lithgow on Monday. Although they put up a strong fight, they were defeated 7-3 by a highly experienced team. Thank you to Miss Dixon and the parents who transported our players to Lithgow and supported them throughout the season.
Finally, I’d like to remind everyone that our Week 8 assembly will take place this Friday at 2 PM, where we will present our usual awards and athletics ribbons to our students.
Wishing you all a fantastic week ahead!
Warm regards,
Sharon Hawker
Principal

EXCITING OOSH UPDATE!
We are thrilled to announce the introduction of an Outside School Hours (OOSH) program at our school! This initiative aims to provide a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for our students before and after school hours.
To ensure the success and viability of this program, we need your support. We are currently seeking more children to enrol. A robust participation will not only enhance the program's offerings but also create a vibrant community where students can connect, learn, and have fun together.
If you are interested in enrolling your child or would like more information about the OOSH program, please use QR Code to register. Your involvement is crucial in making this program a valuable addition to our school community.
Thank you for your support!

PSSA Soccer Round 3
On Monday the boys travelled to Lithgow for their round 3 PSSA Soccer match. They arrived to beautiful blue skies and warm weather, after having a very foggy trip over. The boys started off very strong and had a very quick 2-0 lead after 6 minutes. Unfortunately Lithgow then started to play and caught up quickly. The boys dug deep and showed great resilience and defended their hearts out, they were unable to finish a few scoring opportunities. The boys lost to Lithgow 7-3 but were able to have a Maccas reward after the game before the trip home.

Year 5 Canberra Excursion
Day 1
Early in the morning, we left Canowindra Public. It was a long and cold journey. We stopped to have recess at the Old Parliament House. We learnt about voting and did a pretend vote; peach won out of our four options. Then we did the Embassy Drive By Tour. Afterwards, we had lunch out the front of Questacon. There was this interesting thing that had a speaker making these weird sounds. Then we went inside and got our stuff from the gift shop. We explored these four amazing rooms, and one had this big slide called the Free Fall. Miss Smith even went on it. Then we went to the Australian War Memorial and saw a grave for the unknown soldier. Hunter Bowd and Alexa Roth got to lay a wreath to show our respect to the soldiers who died in the war. Then we went to see our cabins for the time, and we will be honest, it wasn't the best—the beds were very squeaky. Then we went to dinner. It was the best dinner ever. After dinner, we had showers, and when we were done, we watched Paper Planes. Then we went to sleep.
Day 2
When we woke up, we got dressed and went down for breakfast. Let's just say it wasn't the best, but we had to eat it. Then we went to the Mint, where they make coins, and our guide showed us the factory and the three robots that help them pack and make the coins. Then someone asked them how much money is in the factory, and the person said, "Are you a robber?" Then we went to the Parliament House and looked at all the rooms, then did a roleplay and took a photo outside. Then we went to have lunch outside AIS. It was cold; we had sandwiches—they were good. Then we went to AIS, which had a really cool room with activities, and then went for a tour of the different sport arenas. Then we got on the bus for a long drive home. Three hours later, we arrived at Canowindra, and then we went home to our families.

NSW Public Schools Student Survey
In Term 2, our school is taking part in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey is being conducted by the NSW Department of Education and invites students in Year 3 to 6 to provide valuable feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. The survey will allow the department to conduct analysis and research into student wellbeing and engagement to drive improvement for all NSW public schools.
What you need to know:
• Participating students will be given a unique login to complete the survey online. Their responses will be anonymous.
• Students will complete the survey at school during school hours. The survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
• Participating in the survey is voluntary. Opting not to participate will not impact your child’s school experience. Your child can choose to stop the survey at any time and they can skip any questions that they prefer not to answer.
• More information about the survey and the research is available at education.nsw.gov.au/npss.
If you would prefer your child to opt out of the survey, please contact the school on 6344 1403 for relevant paperwork.
Attendance Matters

We know that it can sometimes be challenging getting your child to school, especially if they are experiencing anxiety or refusing to attend school.
They might be worried about their schoolwork, their friendship circles, playing sports or being away from their family. If you are concerned about your child's attendance at school or any other issues that may affect their attendance, please reach out to your child’s teachers.
We are here to support you and your child to make sure they are ready and engaged at school.
You can also access resources on the department website to support positive conversations with your child about attending school.
Our Learner Qualities

We are proud to reintroduce our Visible Learning qualities, which are essential traits that empower our students to thrive both academically and personally. These qualities include:
I Am Resilient: Our students learn to bounce back from setbacks and challenges, developing persistence and determination in their pursuit of success.
I Am Creative: We encourage creativity by inspiring students to think outside the box and approach problems with innovative solutions.
I Seek Feedback: Our students understand the value of constructive feedback as a tool for growth, actively seeking input to improve their learning and performance.
I Embrace Challenge: We foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to take on challenges and view them as opportunities for learning and development.
I Am Self-motivated: Our students take ownership of their learning, setting personal goals and striving to achieve them with enthusiasm and commitment.
These Visible Learning qualities are integral to our educational approach, helping students become confident, capable learners who are prepared for future success. Together, we will cultivate these qualities to create a supportive and engaging learning environment.

What are Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy? Why these?
● Gratitude is about paying attention to and being thankful for the things we have.
● Empathy is about understanding others’ feelings and perspectives and being kind to others.
● Mindfulness is about bringing our attention to the present moment and being aware of our thoughts, emotions and surroundings.
● Emotional Literacy is about labelling our emotions as we experience them and increasing our emotional vocabulary.
● There is a wealth of supporting academic research on the mental and physical benefits of these strategies. More information can be found on the References and reading section of our website.
