Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to my wonderful executive team for filling in for me last week while I was on long service leave. It was great to visit Tassie but it’s great to be back!
Covid-19 is having an impact on many schools around the area and it’s beginning to infiltrate into our school. Covid email alerts will be sent out when we are informed of a positive case within our school. Parents are to be extra vigilant with their children if their stage has been identified. We use this system as children are mixing within stages in maths and spelling groups:
· Stage 1 – K-2
· Stage 2 – 3-4
· Stage 3 – 5-6
It would be appreciated if surveillance testing be conducted within the identified groups to minimise the spread. If students have any symptoms, please keep them at home and monitor/ test. All positive cases and close contacts (family members) must isolate for 7 days from when the test was conducted. NSW Health and school must be notified. If you required additional tests please contact the school.
We had 4 teams (2 senior, 2 junior) participate in the rugby league gala day in Cowra yesterday. The kids had a great day and improved their skills as the day went on. Thank you to Miss Toovey and Mrs Howard for helping out at short notice on the day and to Mr Bates for all his organisation.
School photos are coming up in a few weeks on Tuesday 5th April. Students will be required to wear their summer uniform. Please make sure students are in their best yellow shirt, if they chose to wear it. New shirts may be purchased online via POP payments on our website and can be sent home with students, if required.
Infants Easter Hat parade has been moved to Thursday 7th April at 2pm, and there will be NO Staff Development Day next term, students and staff will return on Tuesday 26th April.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
A friendly reminder about pick up at the end of the day at Belmore St gate. Please avoid parking in the church yard and along Lola St. All parking needs to be on Belmore St. This will ensure the safety of all our students.
Check-in Assessment
Students in Year 4 and Year 6 will be completing the Check-in assessment over the next few weeks. The check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment. Student are required to use headphones for the assessment. If your child has a set of headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer, we ask that they please bring them to school in Week 8, 9 and 10.
Latest COVID-19 Advice
You may have heard that the Minister released the Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order 2022 (PDF 1,814KB), which commenced at 5pm Wednesday 2 March 2022. The Order revokes and remakes the current Public Health (COVID-19 Self-Isolation) Order (No 4) 2021, with the following amendments relevant to our schools:
- A household contact will only need to self-isolate for 7 days commencing from when the diagnosed person took the test, rather than 7 days from last contact with the diagnosed person.
- A household contact is not obligated to self-isolate as a contact more than once in a 21 day period (if the person is diagnosed with COVID-19, they will need to self-isolate again).
- A person who had COVID-19 and later becomes a close contact or household contact does not need to self-isolate as a contact if it has been less than 8 weeks since the person finished their self-isolation period (up from 28 days in the current Order).
While the source of truth remains the NSW Government website, we have gone ahead and updated references to self-isolation on the relevant department internal and external COVID-19 webpages, as well as linking our staff and families to further information on the NSW Government’s Testing positive to COVID-19 and Information for people exposed to COVID-19 fact sheets.
Refer to Response protocols for COVID-19 cases for further information.
If you test positive with a rapid antigen test
Report through the Service NSW websiteExternal link and Service SNW app.External link so you can be linked to important health care support and advice based on your COVID-19 risk. If you or someone in your family can’t register online, please call Service NSW on 13 77 88
If you test positive with a PCR or rapid antigen test, you must:
- Isolate immediately for 7 days. Your household must also isolate for 7 days. If you have a sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath after 7 days, please remain in isolation until 24 hours after your symptoms have resolved.
- Tell people who you spent time with from the 2 days before you started having symptoms or 2 days before you tested positive (whichever came first) that you have COVID-19. This includes your social contacts, workplace and/or school.
- Monitor your symptoms. If you are concerned you should call your GP, the NSW Health COVID-19 Care at Home Support Line on 1800 960 933 or the National Coronavirus Helpline on 1800 020 080. If symptoms become severe call 000.
All positive COVID-19 cases should be reported to the school if they have attended school recently.
Unwell at school
Any student or staff member who is unwell and/or displays symptoms of COVID-19 will be asked to go home and stay until they can complete a RAT or PCR test.
- If symptoms continue, they should stay at home and take another RAT in 24 hours or have a PCR test.
- If the second RAT or initial PCR test result is negative and they are displaying no symptoms OR they are diagnosed as another condition such as hayfever, the student or staff member can return to school.
- In NSW, positive COVID-19 cases are provided a Medical Clearance Notice after 7 days and allowed to leave self-isolation as long as they do not have COVID-19 symptoms.
Students who are isolating at home
If a student tests positive or is a close contact they must isolate for 7 days. School work can be accessed via the class' online platform and through the Digital Learnig Resource Hub. This involves learning at home without a teacher.
Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.

Rugby League Gala Day
Miss Toovey and Mrs Howard took 4 teams to Cowra to play in the Rugby Gala Day.
We are happy to report that all students had a wonderful day getting out and being active. Thank you to the parents and grandparents who came across to support our teams. All teams played well.
A big thank you to Mrs Howard for volunteering her time to manage the Stage 2 teams and to Mr Bates for all of his organisation and ensuring the students were ready to participate.
PSSA Cricket Canowindra v Cowra
Congratulations to the Canowindra KO Cricket Team on their impressive win today against Cowra Public School! Canowindra won the toss and elected to bat. Fraser Wythes was quick to strike with a wicket in with his second ball of the day and ended his bowling with impressive figures of 2 for 7. In his first bowling spell, Jay Burn got a wicket early and came back after a break with 4 wickets in 1 over. Jay finished with an impressive 5 for 9. Cowra was all out for 91. All students fielded well and improved as the innings progressed.
Canowindra went into bat. Jay Burn and Spencer Markcrow put on a master class with the bat. Both batters showed patience and skill, hitting 4's and running quick singles. Jay Burn finished the day 30 not out and Spencer Markcrow with 15 not out. The boys reached Cowra's score in 15 overs. It was great to see students from both schools getting out and enjoying the game! Students are looking forward to continuing to strengthen their skills in preparation for their next game.
A big thank you to the Markcrow family who donated cricket gear to the school in 2021. We are very appreciative of your kind gesture.

P & C News
The executive and committee would like to invite you all to our:
AGM - Wednesday 30th March at 6.30pm.
Canowindra Services Club meeting room.
All positions will be declared vacant.
President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and committee members.
If you are interested and have any questions, please feel free to contact us for more information on what is involved. All of these positions can be made as busy or as quiet as you feel comfortable with.
The general committee is really (I believe) the most important role of our P & C. We be grateful to have a wonderful general committee to help support our executives, in either a small or large role. If we don’t have this, we don’t have the new ideas, more options for events and a broad range of opinions to listen to and take on board when deciding on ideas.
To become a general committee member all you need to do is fill our membership form in (supplied on the night or can be emailed) and pay a membership fee of $1.
It is very true when they say many hands make light work. You may not be able to come to school but are able to do behind the scenes at home. Every little job is important and makes the event run smoothly.
We all are busy, generally running after our kids!!! So if you can’t make all the meetings that is not a problem. ( a lot of decisions are made through our messenger group) We would love to see previous members re-joining but we would also love new members to come and be a part of our wonderful P & C.
