Week 1 Term 2 Newsletter 2022
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope everyone had a wonderful Autumn break. Canowindra was a hive of activity over the holidays and the weather was amazing. Hopefully everyone was able to recharge their batteries in readiness for Term 2.
Thank you to all our parents for returning your children to school on Tuesday, this means that students will not need to attend school on Monday 19th Dec. and the end of Term 4 will cease on Friday 16th December.
Unfortunately, the Netball Gala Day was postponed today due to the weather. An alternative date has not been agreed upon, as soon as we know we’ll let all interested parties know.
The Year 6 Peer Support Camp will be going ahead this Thursday and Friday at the Mt Canobolas Scout Camp, please make sure your child has a change of clothes for both days and a raincoat. Most activities will be conducted indoors, however, if there is a break in the weather the students will be able to get outside to play.
Applications for the Year 5 Aurora class 2023 are now open. Please see the flyer attached in the newsletter. All applications must be submitted by parents, school cannot submit applications and they must be received by Week 3, Friday 13th May. No late applications will be considered.
Next Wednesday 4th May there will be a planned strike for all NSW Department of Education Schools due to the ongoing concerns about staff shortages, pay and workload to name a few. Our school will be open, however there will be minimal supervision.
Don't forget the P&C Mother's Day stall and morning tea next Friday. This coincides with our Primary Cross Country in the morning and Infants Cross Country at 12pm.
Finally, a big thank you to The Big Lift from UTS, who once again volunteered their time last weekend whilst staying in our hall. They did gardening jobs at our school as well as at St Eddies and the Preschool. Great timing just before the rain!
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
A friendly reminder about pick up at the end of the day at Belmore St gate. Please avoid parking in the church yard and along Lola St. All parking needs to be on Belmore St. This will ensure the safety of all our students.

Anzac Day March
Thank you to all our families who attended the ANZAC Day March on Monday. It was great to be back representing our wonderful school on such an important day on the calendar. The students showed great respect during the service and were highly commended by the organisers and the community.
Check-in Assessment
Students in Year 4 and Year 6 who haven't completed the check in assessment will be doing so over the next few weeks. The check-in assessment is a NSW Department of Education online reading and numeracy assessment. Student are required to use headphones for the assessment. If your child has a set of headphones or earbuds that plug into a computer, we ask that they please bring them to school.
Latest COVID-19 Advice
As we move into Term 2 and the winter months, the pandemic is expected to continue to have a significant impact on school operations. Below is an update on the health settings in preparation for the start of term.
Positive COVID-19 result
Any student or staff member who tests positive to COVID-19 is required to follow NSW Health requirements. Currently, the requirements are:
- isolate for 7 days following the positive test
- leave isolation after 7 days if no symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath)
- if there are symptoms after 7 days, then remain in isolation until 24 hours after symptoms have resolved.
Staff and students who return a positive RAT result must register it on the Service NSW app or service.nsw.gov.au website as soon as possible.
If there is a positive case in your child’s class, year or other grouping, your child can continue to attend school in line with NSW Health advice. The School will continue to provide advice on the incidence of positive cases at school.
Changed close contact rules
On 20 April the NSW Government announced close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case will not be required to isolate, provided they comply with NSW Health guidelines.
From 6pm on Friday 22 April, close contacts (defined as a household contact or an individual deemed by NSW Health to be a close contact) will not have to isolate, as long as they have no symptoms and comply with the following guidelines:
- wear a face mask in indoor settings outside the home
- undertake daily Rapid Antigen tests before coming into close contact with people outside their home
- avoid contact with the elderly/immunocompromised
- do not visit aged care, hospitals, disability and correctional facilities unless an exemption applies
- work from home where possible
- notify their employer/educational facility that they are a close contact, and that they are not required to isolate as long as they comply with the above.
Close contacts will need to comply with the above guidelines for 7 days from the time a person in their household tested positive for COVID-19.
Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.
