Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
What a great day had by all, last Friday! The weather was glorious, the kids had fun running around the golf course and school and it was great to see so many familiar faces at our Mother’s Day morning tea. A huge thank you to everyone who helped before, during and after the day, many hands make light work. The next P&C event will be the District Cross Country canteen at the showground on Friday 27th May, this will be another great opportunity to get together and help out our great school. If you can spare an extra hour to help in the canteen from 8am – 12pm please contact the P&C on their Facebook page.
MSP Photography will be coming to our school this Friday 13th May for their final catch up day starting at 9am. All children who missed out on their school photos and didn’t attend the catch up session in the holidays, will have their photo taken this Friday. Please ensure everyone is in school uniform.
A letter and statement of account has been sent in the mail to all our families. This includes voluntary school fees and any monies outstanding. The best way to pay for these accounts is via our school website https://canowindra-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/ and click on the tab at the top of the page – MAKE A PAYMENT. This tab has been upgraded to make it quicker and easier to access. School voluntary contributions remain the same as last year:
$50 for 1st child
$40 for 2nd child
$30 for 3rd child
$20 for 4th child
5th child or more free
Final call for Aurora applications for any Year 4 students who would like to be considered for the gifted and talented online classroom at our school next year. These applications close on Friday and must be completed online by parents. See information in newsletter.
Finally, don’t forget NAPLAN started this week for all Year 3 and Year 5 students. Please make sure your child is ready for these tests and has had a good night’s sleep and full breakfast each day. All we ask is that students read the questions carefully and do their best. It is only one test on one day every two years until Year 9. It is designed to track each child’s progress through school, it is “snap shot” of their progress. There is no pressure placed on students and they should feel well supported by staff and parents. Parents and schools will be given results by the end of the term. If your child is away they can “catch up” until the end of next week.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
A friendly reminder about pick up at the end of the day at Belmore St gate. Please avoid parking in the church yard and along Lola St. All parking needs to be on Belmore St. This will ensure the safety of all our students.

Infant Cross Country
What a great day we all had on Friday. The weather was perfect and their were lots of smiles and laughter as the children ran round the oval and got a taste of what it's like to do a cross country event - 1 lap for Kinder, 2 laps for Year 1 and 3 laps for Year 2. Well done everyone!
PSSA Cricket Knockout
The cricket team travelled to Orange to play against OSSA Green. Canowindra lost the toss and OSSA Green elected to bowl.
OSSA Green's bowling was consistent and did not leave much room for our batsmen to score runs. At the completion of Canowindra's innings, we were 2/66 with Jay Burn topping the batting with a score of 33 runs and Spencer Markcrow not out with 10 runs and Sam Markcrow not out.
OSSA Green took to the pitch ready. Jay Burn and Fraser Wythes each took a wicket each early on. OSSA Green reached the 66 runs set by Canowindra shortly after the drinks break.
The cricket team showed great improvement from our first game against Cowra PS.
Well played everyone and thank you to the parents who transported players on the day.
PSSA Netball Knockout
Last week, the Canowindra Public School Stage 3 netball team versed Grenfell Public School. It was a great day and we all played extremely well. There was lots of great communication on the court helping us to win 12-6. This means that we have progressed to the second round, and we will now be versing Millthorpe Public School. Congratulations!

Latest COVID-19 Advice
As we move into Term 2 and the winter months, the pandemic is expected to continue to have a significant impact on school operations. Below is an update on the health settings in preparation for the start of term.
Positive COVID-19 result
Any student or staff member who tests positive to COVID-19 is required to follow NSW Health requirements. Currently, the requirements are:
- isolate for 7 days following the positive test
- leave isolation after 7 days if no symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath)
- if there are symptoms after 7 days, then remain in isolation until 24 hours after symptoms have resolved.
Staff and students who return a positive RAT result must register it on the Service NSW app or service.nsw.gov.au website as soon as possible.
If there is a positive case in your child’s class, year or other grouping, your child can continue to attend school in line with NSW Health advice. The School will continue to provide advice on the incidence of positive cases at school.
Changed close contact rules
On 20 April the NSW Government announced close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case will not be required to isolate, provided they comply with NSW Health guidelines.
From 6pm on Friday 22 April, close contacts (defined as a household contact or an individual deemed by NSW Health to be a close contact) will not have to isolate, as long as they have no symptoms and comply with the following guidelines:
- wear a face mask in indoor settings outside the home
- undertake daily Rapid Antigen tests before coming into close contact with people outside their home
- avoid contact with the elderly/immunocompromised
- do not visit aged care, hospitals, disability and correctional facilities unless an exemption applies
- work from home where possible
- notify their employer/educational facility that they are a close contact, and that they are not required to isolate as long as they comply with the above.
Close contacts will need to comply with the above guidelines for 7 days from the time a person in their household tested positive for COVID-19.
Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.
