Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Congratulations to our public speakers who are representing our school at the district level of the CWA Public Speaking Competition, from Monday to Thursday this week. George McKenzie from Year 3 did a great job and really enjoyed his experience, Emily Bullock Year 4 received highly commended, and Mack Pengilly from Year 5 and Sofia D’Onise from Year 6 are yet to speak. Well done to all these students, it can very daunting and nerve racking to speak in front of an audience, I’m sure you’ll all gain confidence and knowledge from this experience.
Well done to our Stage 2 and 3 dancers who performed at the Cowra Eisteddfod last week. Both groups got highly commended and narrowly missed out on a place. Stage 3 will now perform at the Western Dance Festival in Bathurst on Tuesday June 7. The girls' touch football team had a great day at the PSSA local knockout in Cowra yesterday. Well done to the girls for their stellar performance, you represented our school very well with your skills and attitude throughout the day. Thank you to Ms Laurie for coaching the team.
Stage 2 and 3 will be participating in a cyber safety presentation today which will be delivered by the Police Youth Liaison Office – Rachael Joyce. Rachael will go through a presentation she delivers to all school students about being aware of cyber safety and what to do if this happens. Most children have access to a device at home and school. The department has strict policies relating to cyber safety and we can monitor student usage very carefully at school. Private devices at home can be harder to monitor and it is important that students understand how to be safe and this is what this presentation aims to achieve. If there are any issues regarding children or adults these can be reported to the e-safety commissioner which has updated its response to online safety, please see flyer in the newsletter.
Our Visible Learner Quality posters have finally arrived. We delayed the launch of these until this year due to the disrupted nature of the last few years. These posters have been put up in every classroom and learning space. Our learner qualities are: resilient, creative, self motivated, seeks feedback and embrace challenge. These qualities will be referred to in all lessons and will give students the necessary skills to become lifelong learners. Stay tuned for more news on these learner qualities.
Good luck to all our runners at Friday’s cross country carnival. The bus will be leaving school at 9am sharp. Please be prepared for the day with plenty of water, warm clothes and hat. A canteen will be available on day, run by our wonderful P&C, make sure you support, all profits go back to our school!
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
If there is a change of routine for your child at the end of the day, please notify the office by 2.30pm.
PSS Girls Touch Football
Well done to our touch football girls who played in the PSSA knockout competition yesterday. They won the first round against Cowra Public 4-2. They then had to back up and play round 2 against Mulyan. The girls improved on their defence and attack in the second game and made some impressive breaks. Mulyan snuck through and got the only try of the game. The girls all should be very proud of themselves and would have slept very well last night.
Dance - Cowra Eisteddfod
On Thursday 19th of May Canowindra Public School dance groups went to Cowra Eisteddfod. We arrived at the Civic Centre and headed inside. We ended up in the dressing rooms and sat down. We watched the other dancers on the television. It was finally the year 3’s and 4’s turn to dance. They left the room and they danced to the lollipop song. The 5’s and 6’s watched them through the television as well. Eventually it was the 5’s and 6’s turn they went on the stage and danced to Waka Waka. Everyone did so well and they all had fun which is the main thing. Both groups came highly commended which is very good. We left the eisteddfod and caught the bus to Holman Place School. When we got there we sat down on the cement and ate recess. Their school bell rang and we went and had a play with the kids on the playground. The school bell rang again to go to class but instead of them going to class they watched us dance on the grass. It was time to go and we all said goodbye and set off for home.
By: Maisie Swords, Lydia Wythes and Dimity Rogers.
Congratulations to our Stage 2 and Stage 3 dancers who performed at the Cowra Eisteddfod. Both groups were awarded Highly Commended, well done girls! Following this they visited Holman Place Public School where they showcased their dancing and enjoyed interacting with the students playing outside in the schools playground.

Latest COVID-19 Advice
As we move into Term 2 and the winter months, the pandemic is expected to continue to have a significant impact on school operations. Below is an update on the health settings in preparation for the start of term.
Positive COVID-19 result
Any student or staff member who tests positive to COVID-19 is required to follow NSW Health requirements. Currently, the requirements are:
- isolate for 7 days following the positive test
- leave isolation after 7 days if no symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath)
- if there are symptoms after 7 days, then remain in isolation until 24 hours after symptoms have resolved.
Staff and students who return a positive RAT result must register it on the Service NSW app or service.nsw.gov.au website as soon as possible.
If there is a positive case in your child’s class, year or other grouping, your child can continue to attend school in line with NSW Health advice. The School will continue to provide advice on the incidence of positive cases at school.
Changed close contact rules
On 20 April the NSW Government announced close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case will not be required to isolate, provided they comply with NSW Health guidelines.
From 6pm on Friday 22 April, close contacts (defined as a household contact or an individual deemed by NSW Health to be a close contact) will not have to isolate, as long as they have no symptoms and comply with the following guidelines:
- wear a face mask in indoor settings outside the home
- undertake daily Rapid Antigen tests before coming into close contact with people outside their home
- avoid contact with the elderly/immunocompromised
- do not visit aged care, hospitals, disability and correctional facilities unless an exemption applies
- work from home where possible
- notify their employer/educational facility that they are a close contact, and that they are not required to isolate as long as they comply with the above.
Close contacts will need to comply with the above guidelines for 7 days from the time a person in their household tested positive for COVID-19.
Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.
