Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Winter has arrived with vengeance! We were lucky enough to get our cross country carnival completed just in time before the rain arrived last Friday. We held another very successful event with over 300 students completing the course. Twelve students from CPS made it through to Western which is to be held in Geurie in a few weeks’ time; please see full report in the newsletter. Huge thank you again to Eleena and parents for running a wonderful canteen, all proceeds went to the P&C. Thanks for your support! And finally, thank you to Ms Laurie and Miss Dixon for all the thought and preparation they put into the organisation of the carnival.
National Reconciliation Week is held every year from 27th May – 3rd June and this week our students have been learning about our shared histories, cultures and achievements. This enables everyone to strengthening relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and non-Indigenous peoples for the benefit of all Australians. Peer Support groups also designed Reconciliation Week Posters which will be displayed in the connected classroom.
Athletics heats day has been moved back to school due to the weather forecast this Friday and the state of The Oval. We will hold all field events at school except for the for 1500m which we will catch up later in the term. Hopefully The Oval dries out soon so we can have our athletics carnival in a few weeks’ time. Due to the athletics heats day, our Week 6 assembly has been moved to Friday Week 7.
Year 5 Canberra excursion is coming up next Wed 8th June – Thurs 9th June. All notes, medical forms and money are due by this Friday in order for the bus company to confirm numbers at all the venues. This is a wonderful excursion to all the major attractions in Canberra including Parliament House, Questacon, National War Memorial and AIS to name a few. The Parliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER) subsides our school so that students can attend this excursion at a reduced rate.
Now that winter is here it’s important children are coming to school in appropriate clothing. Many children are coming to school with bare arms and legs and shivering throughout the day. As we know layering is very important in winter as our classrooms are nice and warm due to the wonderful new split system air cons, therefore jumpers and jackets are needed when heading outside. We have a comprehensive collection of jumpers, jackets and raincoats at the school for purchase. Please see further information in the newsletter.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
If there is a change of routine for your child at the end of the day, please notify the office by 2.30pm.

Latest COVID-19 Advice
As we move into Term 2 and the winter months, the pandemic is expected to continue to have a significant impact on school operations. Below is an update on the health settings in preparation for the start of term.
Positive COVID-19 result
Any student or staff member who tests positive to COVID-19 is required to follow NSW Health requirements. Currently, the requirements are:
- isolate for 7 days following the positive test
- leave isolation after 7 days if no symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath)
- if there are symptoms after 7 days, then remain in isolation until 24 hours after symptoms have resolved.
Staff and students who return a positive RAT result must register it on the Service NSW app or service.nsw.gov.au website as soon as possible.
If there is a positive case in your child’s class, year or other grouping, your child can continue to attend school in line with NSW Health advice. The School will continue to provide advice on the incidence of positive cases at school.
Changed close contact rules
On 20 April the NSW Government announced close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case will not be required to isolate, provided they comply with NSW Health guidelines.
From 6pm on Friday 22 April, close contacts (defined as a household contact or an individual deemed by NSW Health to be a close contact) will not have to isolate, as long as they have no symptoms and comply with the following guidelines:
- wear a face mask in indoor settings outside the home
- undertake daily Rapid Antigen tests before coming into close contact with people outside their home
- avoid contact with the elderly/immunocompromised
- do not visit aged care, hospitals, disability and correctional facilities unless an exemption applies
- work from home where possible
- notify their employer/educational facility that they are a close contact, and that they are not required to isolate as long as they comply with the above.
Close contacts will need to comply with the above guidelines for 7 days from the time a person in their household tested positive for COVID-19.
Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.
Class in Focus
Each week one of our classes will be chosen to showcase the great learning that is happening in our school. This weeks Class is: Year 1/2 L
Meet the 1/2L engineers....Last week, we built different 3D shapes using spaghetti and marshmallows! We made cubes, pyramids, and triangular prisms. We counted how many edges and vertices were needed to build each shape. We had great fun exploring the difference between these shapes and we were so proud when they stood up without our support!
MA1-3DS-02: describe three-dimensional objects using the terms ‘face’, ‘edge’ and ‘vertex’.
