Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Wow, we have had a very busy term for sporting and public speaking events. Last week saw the culmination of cross country at Geurie. There were lots of PBs and Noah Grey finished in the top 10 of his age group. Congratulations to Sofia D'Onise Year 5, for making it to the next round of the CWA public speaking. Sofia spoke very well and gained in confidence as the competition progressed. Our last sporting event for the term concludes today with our girls’ soccer team traveling to Grenfell to play the next round of the PSSA competition. Thank you again to Miss Dixon and parents for driving the girls and being their support crew.
What a great day we all had at last Thursday’s athletics carnival! I was so impressed by everyone’s enthusiasm and perseverance throughout the day. We battled the weather and the cold but everyone enjoyed themselves and displayed great sportsmanship towards each other. A huge thanks you to Miss Dixon and all the primary teachers for helping on the day.
Three way interviews will be taking place next week in our school hall. Online bookings will close this Friday at 3pm. These can be booked via the Sentral parent portal/ app. This is a wonderful opportunity to speak with your child and the classroom teacher. The students really look forward to being part of this experience and Semester 1 reports will be given out at the same time. Please see additional information in the newsletter.
The SRC has organised a crazy sock day for this Friday. All students are encouraged to wear their crazy socks or odd socks. This is intended to be a fun day, it is not a fundraiser event and parents are not expected to go out and buy crazy socks.
Next Thursday 30th June, there is a strike planned for all NSW Public and Catholic schools. This will have an impact on our 3 Way interviews. An email will be sent out to all parents who are affected by this.
Term 3 will resume on Tuesday 19th July for all students. Staff will be attending a SDD on Monday 18th July.
Have a great week! Don’t forget Week 9 assembly this Friday.
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
If there is a change of routine for your child at the end of the day, please notify the office by 2.30pm.

Latest COVID-19 Advice
As we move into Term 2 and the winter months, the pandemic is expected to continue to have a significant impact on school operations. Below is an update on the health settings in preparation for the start of term.
Positive COVID-19 result
Any student or staff member who tests positive to COVID-19 is required to follow NSW Health requirements. Currently, the requirements are:
- isolate for 7 days following the positive test
- leave isolation after 7 days if no symptoms (sore throat, runny nose, cough or shortness of breath)
- if there are symptoms after 7 days, then remain in isolation until 24 hours after symptoms have resolved.
Staff and students who return a positive RAT result must register it on the Service NSW app or service.nsw.gov.au website as soon as possible.
If there is a positive case in your child’s class, year or other grouping, your child can continue to attend school in line with NSW Health advice. The School will continue to provide advice on the incidence of positive cases at school.
Close contact rules
On 20 April the NSW Government announced close contacts of a confirmed COVID-19 case will not be required to isolate, provided they comply with NSW Health guidelines.
From 6pm on Friday 22 April, close contacts (defined as a household contact or an individual deemed by NSW Health to be a close contact) will not have to isolate, as long as they have no symptoms and comply with the following guidelines:
- wear a face mask in indoor settings outside the home
- undertake daily Rapid Antigen tests before coming into close contact with people outside their home
- avoid contact with the elderly/immunocompromised
- do not visit aged care, hospitals, disability and correctional facilities unless an exemption applies
- work from home where possible
- notify their employer/educational facility that they are a close contact, and that they are not required to isolate as long as they comply with the above.
Close contacts will need to comply with the above guidelines for 7 days from the time a person in their household tested positive for COVID-19.
Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.

Athletics Carnival
Working Together Program
Ms Pru McCarthy, who has cerebral palsy, was at Canowindra Public School last week to speak to Year 5 students as part of a free program that aims to explain what it is like to live with a disability and how to treat people with a disability. The Working Together Program involves Pru using her own experiences, presenting activities and games to teach students empathy and to help them to gain an understanding of what it is like to live with a disability. This is a two-part program, and the second part will be held Thursday 23rd June. Students are looking forward to working with this engaging leader.
PSSA Western Cross Country
Well done to all 12 runners who competed in Geurie at Western Cross Country Trials last week. The weather was fabulous and everyone ran well. Congratulations.
PSSA Soccer Rd 2
After both the boys and girls soccer teams having a bye in the PSSA knockout competition, we travelled to Cowra to play Cowra Public in the round 2 matches on Tuesday last week.
The girls played first and started off very strong. With a few close chances to start the game Claire calmly put one in the back of the net. The girls continued on the attack with Claire scoring a double. Emily made some brilliant saves to keep Cowra scoreless. Just before half time, Charlotte joined Claire on the score sheet, making the half time score 3-0. Cowra came out strong in the second half and went quickly on the attack, scoring two goals in the second half. Canowindra held on for the win the game 3-2 and now face Grenfell Public in their round 3 match.
The boys took to the field and started with some strong attack. Will Swords scored quickly, making the score 1-0. Unfortunately, Cowra were too strong and continued on the attack for a good part of the game. Canowindra were defeated 6-1.
Well done to both teams for great encouragement and good sportsmanship.
Good luck in your next game, girls.
Mindy Dixon
