Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Happy Father’s Day to all our dads. I hope you all got spoilt and showered with gifts and cards made with love. Thanks to the P&C for organising a wonderful stall last Thursday, the students loved shopping for that special male in their lives.
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, we have done exceptionally well in our NAPLAN results this year. Year 3 were above state average in reading, writing, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy. Year 5 were above SSSG (similar schools) in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, and above state average in numeracy. This a huge result from our school and we are all very proud of the effort everyone has been putting in over the years. It proves that our programs are working and the holistic approach which we embrace, is having a positive impact on every child in the school.
Tomorrow our school will be hosting the Canowindra Community Reading Day. We have invited all K-2 students and children from the preschool to enjoy a picnic lunch and then everyone will watch the performance Stellaphant based on the picture book by James Foley in our hall. The performance is being funded by grants which the Canowindra Community Reading Day has accessed. The aim of the CCRD is to bring everyone together through the love of books. All the students have read the book and are looking forward to seeing it come to life.
On Friday our whole school will be watching a performance called Scott’s BMX trick bike show. Scott tells his story whilst riding his bike and talks about self-discovery, resilience and problem solving. We’re all looking forward to it. There are still quite a few notes and money to be returned. If we haven’t received permission and payment by Friday we will presume you/child doesn’t want to attend.
Year 4 Blue Mountains excursion is coming up next Thursday and Friday. Permission and money is due by the end of the week. This is a great excursion, as many of us pass through the mountains on the way to Sydney and rarely explore the World Heritage Area. There will be a meeting today with the students to reiterate what they need to bring and answer any questions.
Last but definitely not least, it’s SASS Recognition Week, where I’d like to publicly thank all our SASS staff for all their hard work in the office, classrooms and behind the scenes that they do. We are all very grateful and like every great team, we couldn’t do it without them.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker

Todd Woodbridge Cup
Last Friday, Stage 2 students went to Cowra to participate in the Todd Woodbridge Cup. The students played lots of games against other schools and everyone had so much fun doing it. Everyone showed great sportsmanship and improved their tennis skills as the day went on. Well done Stage 2. Thanks to Ms Laurie, Mrs Swords and Helen Garrett for a great day!

Class in Focus
Each week one of our classes will be chosen to showcase the great learning that is happening in our school. This weeks Class is: 1/2 B
1/2B have been exploring the elements of dance this term. These elements are dynamics, space, relationships and time. Initially, students responded to music and the emotions that they felt when listening to music by drawing their emotions. They discussed how dance is an expression of emotion. They then explored different styles of dance and watched videos that show the specific impact of the elements in dance performances. After responding to different dances, students have put into practice what they learnt and have done robotic dancing, the Nutbush and begun work on their concert performance.
DAS1.1: Performs dances demonstrating expressive qualities and control over a range of locomotor and non-locomotor movement.DAS1.2: Explores and selects movement using the elements of dance to make dance express ideas, feelings or moods.DAS1.3: Gives personal opinions about the dances and their purpose that they view and/or experience.

Parents need to be aware that our school operates under strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day of a scheduled school year. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. Please call the school or send a note in within 3 days of absence.
