Week 5 Term 1 Newsletter 2023
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our first assembly of the year last Friday. Our leaders did a wonderful job setting up and running assembly. They all looked very smart in their blazers and are looking forward to their trip to the leadership conference in Sydney in a few weeks’ time.
Miss Chadwick and I had the pleasure of taking 35 of our Stage 3 students to Cowra for the Paul Kelly Cup Gala Day. Our students played remarkably well considering the stifling hot conditions. The boys and girls team played 5 games each. The boys lost two close games to Cowra Public and Forbes Public and won the other three games convincingly. The girls’ team was undefeated and will now go on to the next round in Orange next Friday 3rd March. Information has been posted on the Sentral Parent Portal today. Miss Chadwick will be accompanying the girls and we will need at least 2 other parent drivers to help with transport.
We have been fielding quite a few enquires regarding the commencement of Big Childcare. Unfortunately, we have not received any information about the start date. I have contacted the DoE coordinator and they have advised me that there is an enormous backlog of service approvals in the system and the assessors are approving them at the moment. I have requested that information be sent to parents who have registered as soon as possible.
My School Website is live today. This website enables parents to see how their school performs compared to other similar schools in Australia. You will be able to see that we did exceptionally well with our NAPLAN results in 2022. NAPLAN 2023 will be held in Term 1 this year, which will distort comparative data. However, I’m very pleased with the work staff and students have done over the past few years to ensure every child reaches their potential and achieves their very best each year.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker
Paul Kelly Cup - South West Gala Day
On Monday some year 5/6 Canowindra Public School kids went to Cowra for an AFL Gala day. We hopped on the bus and off we went to Cowra River Park. We then grabbed our stuff from the bus and set it all up, we were nervous but excited to start playing.
The first team the boys played against was Cowra Public School. It was a challenging game but we all had a fantastic time playing and learning the rules of AFL. The boys team went on to verse Forbes Public School, Mulyan Public School, and a few other Cowra Public School boys teams. All teams were fantastic to play against and it was a great, but hot time away.
While the boys were playing the girls went to watch the boys match and had a lot of kicking, a lot of cheering, and the boys tried really hard. Then it was the girls time to shine.
Then the siren rang for the boys to have a break. The the girls went onto the field and got told what position they were playing in. There was either center, back and forward positions. The first team the girls played against was Forbes. As we went into the game we started getting the hang of it. The Canowindra girls team played against Cowra Public School, Mulyan and St Raphs. With excitement the girls won all of their games. They now get the opportunity to play in Orange next Friday.
Overall, it was a absolute blast of a day, playing awesome games and making new friends.

Attendance
Parents need to be aware that our schools operate under very strict guidelines from the NSW government concerning the attendance of students. A child must attend school every day from 9am to 3pm of a scheduled school year. It is a parent's responsibility to ensure that this happens, and it is the school’s responsibility to keep accurate records of attendance. The school is not permitted to approve leave for any reason other than illness, exceptional family circumstances or occasional absence for elite sporting or cultural participation. This may seem severe, but all schools must adhere to these guidelines. Most leave, other than sick will be designated as “explained but unjustified”. If we do not recieve an explaination within 2 weeks, it will be marked as "absent unexplained". Please respond to our absent SMS, they are free of charge.
