Principal's Message
Congratulations to our public speakers who are were chosen to represent their classes at our in-school competition which was held last Thursday. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to get some public speaking practice in front of a larger audience and for the adjudicators (Mrs Howard and myself) to choose who goes through to the next round at Orange’s CWA Public Speaking Competition. Well done to all speakers, it can be a very daunting experience, and all performed very well and showed no sign of nerves at all. It was a very close contest but congratulations goes to Toby Henry - Year 3, Kayden Smith - Year 4, Emily Bullock - Year 5, Mack Pengilly - Year 6.
Our Stage 2 and 3 dancers will be performing at the Cowra Eisteddfod today. We wish them all the very best and a huge thank you goes to Miss Lander and Miss Groves for choreographing and organising this opportunity for the girls. They have been competing for a few years now and I’m sure they will have a great day and enjoy their visit to Holman Place for recess.
Kindergarten will be visiting the Pre-school today for Simultaneous Reading Day to celebrate Imogen’s birthday. This is a lovely gesture and I’m sure everyone will enjoy morning tea and story time.
Good luck to all our runners at this Friday’s district cross country carnival. The bus will be leaving school at 9am sharp. Please be prepared for the day with plenty of water, warm clothes and hat. Canteen facilities will be available on the day, run by our wonderful P&C. Please make sure you support as all profits go back to our school!
Lastly, I’d like to announce that I’m planning on taking long service leave for Semester 2. Mrs Pengilly has been appointed by David Lloyd (Director of Educational Leadership – Cowra network)) through merit selection. Lauren is a very worthy recipient and will do a wonderful job in the role. Lauren’s current position as Infants Assistant Principal will be filled internally by Mrs Miller and Mrs Howard who will be job sharing on Year 2.
I’m also pleased to announce that Mr and Mrs Howard are expecting their second child at the end of term 3. When Mrs Howard goes on maternity leave, Mrs Matic will be returning from maternity leave and will fill in for Kristy on Year 2 and as Infants AP, no doubt seamlessly. I’d like to thank these teachers for coordinating their babies and maternity leave so well!
I will be looking forward to returning in 2024 with fresh eyes and enthusiasm and I’m proud that I have staff who are willing to step into other roles and want to build their capacity in other areas that our school has to offer.
Have a great week!
Kind regards
Sharon Hawker

Class in Focus
Each week one of our classes will be chosen to showcase the great learning that is happening in our school. This week's class is: Kindergarten
Reading Groups in Kindergarten Using Decodable Texts
What are decodable texts?
Decodable texts are specifically written for beginning readers as they are developing their blending and segmenting skills and their knowledge of the alphabetic code. Decodable texts support students as they practise by using a continuous meaningful text.
Decodable texts contain a very large percentage of words that incorporate the letter-sound relationships that students have been taught. Decodable texts increase in complexity as the student learns more of the phonetic code.
ENE-REFLU-01 - reads decodable texts aloud with automaticity
