Relieving Principal's Message
This week we celebrate Education Week. Education Week is an annual celebration of NSW Public Education and the achievements of our schools. This year marks 175 years since the establishment of public schools in NSW. We hope parents and carers can join us on Friday from 12:15pm to 1pm for open classrooms. After 1pm, families can enjoy lunch together in the playground. At 2pm members of the public have been invited to join us for a brief assembly to officially open the paver path and mural on Level 3.
Book Fair has been set up in our new room on Level 2 and is ready for students to view the vast collection of books for sale. Purchases can be made on Open Day during lunch time (between 1pm and 1:45pm) and before school for 20 minutes each morning next week. EFTPOS facilities will be available. This is a great opportunity to support our school and start your Christmas shopping!
Bookings can be made for 3 Way conferences (parent/teacher/student interviews) after 1pm today. Parents and carers at Canowindra Public School have always valued these meetings as a chance to engage in their child’s education. I urge you to book a time to see your child’s teacher via the Sentral parent portal app. Bookings will need to be made by Monday 14th August.
Each week our students are aiming to improve attendance data. The students who achieve 100% attendance for a whole week enter a prize draw. The lucky winners for Week 2 were Xavier Bezhadi-Rad, Ruby Nash and Savannah Forsyth.
Students have been reminded that hats are an important part of the school uniform. The school bucket hats are to be worn when children are playing outside, even on a cloudy day. Please ensure your child has a school hat to wear each day.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at CPS who not only deliver exceptional learning experiences but also ensure our students are provided with amazing opportunities including cultural activities, sporting and community events. If you get a chance this week, please let our staff know how much you value them and the job their doing for our children.
A big thank you also goes to the parents and carers who help transport CPS students to and from off-site school activities. We’d be lost without your endless support and our school community thank you very much!
Hope to see you visiting our open classrooms on Friday!
Kind regards, Lauren Pengilly

NAIDOC Games Afternoon
Inclimate weather at the end of last term forced us to move out NAIDOC celebrations to last Wednsday. Peer Support groups engaged in an afternoon of learning about and playing traditional games from many different Aboringial and Torres Strait Islander groups.
NAIDOC GAMES
Chess Tournament
Last Wednesday and Thursday students from Canowindra Public School competed in the Orange district school chess competition for the first time. Canowindra's two teams of four players were among 160 students from local public, private and independent primary schools that attended. All eight of our students played well and represented the school with pride and exemplary sportsmanship. Our first team performed particularly well to take 4th place in the Intermediate division. A big thank you to all the parents who volunteered to drive and well done to all our players!
Student Support Officer News
Flood and Bushfire Recovery Student Support
Sharon D'Elboux, our Student Support Officer, is trained in the delivery of Stormbirds. This small group program supports children and young people to adapt to experiences of change, loss and grief resulting from natural disasters.
Stormbirds creates a safe place for children to practice new ways of thinking and responding to the change and loss that occurred in their lives as a result of the recent floods and bushfires over summer.
If you and your family were affected by the floods or bushfires and think your child may benefit from additional support, please contact the school and Sharon will get in touch with you to further discuss the program. The impact of the floods or bushfires on your child may have been major, minor, directly or indirectly and if you are not sure, please contact the school.
Class in Focus
Each week one of our classes will be chosen to showcase the great learning that is happening in our school. This week's class is : Kindergarten
Kindergarten have been working hard to improve their writing. We love to write about a story we have read and discussed. We are using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces when we are writing sentences.
Creating Written Texts
ENE-CWT-01 - creates written texts that include at least 2 related ideas and correct simple sentences.
Rugby 7's Competition Finals
Yesterday, our Stage 2 Rugby Team travelled to Dubbo for the Regional Rugby 7’s Finals.
There was a great turnout on the day, with eight teams in the Year 3/4 competition. Our team finished first in their pool at the end of the round games and progressed to the grand final. This was a massive achievement for our team, as their competition all came from much larger schools, including those from Bathurst and Dubbo.
The grand final was a close match between Canowindra and a very strong Holy Family (Kelso) team, and unfortunately Holy Family came out on top at the end of the day. Despite this, the boys all said they had a fun day out, and enjoyed the experience. We even got to meet NSW Waratah players Ned Hanigan and Zane Marolt - who watched some of the boy's play their first game of the day and had a chat!
Thank you to all of the parents who made the trip up to Dubbo, transporting students and helping out on the day. A special mention to Adam Nash, who coached the boys on the day.
KINDERBOUNCE 2023 starting NEXT WEEK ! Help us spread the word.

Attendance - Every day matters
We know that school is the best place to learn. By attending school every day your child will get the most out of their learning and improve their career and life options.
When your child is absent it is important you let the school know, including the reason why, on the day or the day before. This helps make sure we know where our students are and offer support for you and your family if needed.
If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.
Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child’s learning and wellbeing. When your child misses one day a week that’s 40 days of school and 8 weeks of learning in one year. Over an entire school journey this adds up to 2.5 years of lost learning.
While COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses are around especially during the winter months, schools will continue to use COVID-smart measures to minimise the risk of transmission.
If your child is unwell they will need to stay home, get tested for COVID-19 if they are experiencing symptomsExternal link and only return to school when symptom free.
Please contact the school if your child needs to miss school for any reason, so we can plan continued support for your child’s learning and wellbeing.
