Relieving Principal's Message
I hope you have enjoyed the lovely weather over the last few days. Let’s hope it sticks around. Be sure to check your child’s jumpers and jackets this week and make sure they are labelled with their name. As weather warms up students tend to leave their winter clothes around the school. If you are missing a jumper or two, drop in and check out lost property.
For the first time in six weeks we finally saw a positive shift in student attendance. Let’s hope it continues! As a reward for this improvement, the students will enjoy some extra play at lunchtime today. We are aiming to increase the number of students who are at school 100% of the time, ensuring they don’t miss any of their time at school. We kindly remind all parents to ensure their child attends school daily, except for justified reasons such as illness, urgent familiy circumstances and unavoidable medical appointments. Every day counts in shaping their future success.
We have some very excited Infants (Kinder to Year 2) students this week as they prepare for their excursion to Dubbo Zoo on Friday. Please note the bus leaves from school at 8am and returns at 4:30pm, so please make arrangements to ensure your children arrive on time and can get home at the end of the day.
Next week Year 6 will sit the Check-in Assessment over three days. This is an online assessment for students in NSW and will assess their reading, numeracy and writing skills. The best way to prepare for these assessments is to ensure students get quality sleep beforehand. They will need headphones and a jumper on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Thank you to the P&C who organized the Father’s Day Stall for our students today. The students had a lovely time shopping for some special people in their lives. We hope all dads, grandads, stepdads, uncles and those stepping up as father figures for our students enjoy a special day on Sunday.
Have a great week. Lauren Pengilly

Year 6 Berry Sport & Rec Excursion
Day 1
On Monday, Year 6 departed Canowindra to travel to Berry Sport and Rec Centre. Our bus trip was around 6 hours and we were very relieved to arrive. We headed straight down to the rec hall to learn some circus skills. There was juggling, fire sticks, plate spinning and diablos. After we finished circus skills, we all headed to our dorms and had some free time setting up our rooms for the week. Dinner on our first night was spaghetti bolognaise and jelly and fruit for dessert. After dinner and some free time, we had our first night activity which was team bonding games against the other school.
Day 2
We all woke up at 7am ready for a big day ahead. Our first activity of the day was Initiatives. We were split into groups and were given a variety of problem-solving activities that we needed to work together to solve. We learnt the saying ‘One team, one dream’. Andy Goldsworthy Art was next up, where we created masterpieces out of nature we had collected during a walk around the centre. After lunch, we worked as a big group to fill up 5 buckets of water balloons which equalled around 750 balloons. We then competed in a number of challenges against the other school and teachers to throw our water balloons. For dinner on day 2, we had butter chicken, naan, apple crumble and custard.
Day 3
Our first activity of the day was archery. We had turns at shooting the target and finding out our futures using the fortune teller sheets. Next up, we conquered our fears in the dark maze. Harry and Spencer tied with the fastest time of 33 seconds to make their way to the end. After lunch, we were challenged on making our own campfires to cook damper. We split up in 3 groups and everyone got to enjoy freshly made damper with golden syrup. We ended by playing a new favourite game of camouflage. Dinner on day 3 was beef goulash and chocolate mousse.
Day 4
Today we created our own stalls and made ‘Berry Bucks’ to buy and sell our products. We created stalls for nail painting, hair spray, hot chocolates, tyre holding, sock wrestling, basketball activities, ping pong cups and lots more. After lunch, we learnt some bike skills and rode around the centre on the bike tracks and down near the creek. Dinner on Day 4 was chicken drumsticks, veggies and banana cake. We were beginning to get really tied so we had an early night and watched the footy in our common rooms.
Day 5
Today we packed up our things, farewelled Berry and drove home. ABC categories was a fan favourite game on the bus trip home. We were very excited to see our families and have a good rest over the weekend.

KINDERBOUNCE & KINDER ORIENTATION
We have welcomed some of our Kinder 2024 students to our school over the last 4 weeks for Kinderbounce. What a wonderful group of young people who will be great role models for their younger peers in Kinder Orientation next term.
A big shout out to our local Canowindra Preschool who year after year prepare students for their next step to 'big school'. We truly value the positive impact the preschool has on the lives of our students and we would like to publicly acknowledge the wonderful work they do for our community.

Class in Focus
Each week one of our classes will be chosen to showcase the great learning that is happening in our school. This week's class is : 1/2
This week, 1/2 have been learning how to write lists using commas, to separate our ideas within a sentence. We have been reading "Tilly" by Jane Godwin - which tells the story of a little girl who keeps her precious treasures safe in a special hiding place.
First, 1/2 wrote a sentence about some of Tilly's treasures: her favourite drawing, stripy sweets, and her wooden dolls. Using this as an example, students then wrote their own sentence, listing their treasures. Students then checked in with Miss Groves to see what they could improve - working on seeking feedback, one of our learner qualities.
Attendance - Every day matters
We know that school is the best place to learn. By attending school every day your child will get the most out of their learning and improve their career and life options.
When your child is absent it is important you let the school know, including the reason why, on the day or the day before. This helps make sure we know where our students are and offer support for you and your family if needed.
If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.
Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child’s learning and wellbeing. When your child misses one day a week that’s 40 days of school and 8 weeks of learning in one year. Over an entire school journey this adds up to 2.5 years of lost learning.
While COVID-19 and other respiratory illnesses are around especially during the winter months, schools will continue to use COVID-smart measures to minimise the risk of transmission.
If your child is unwell they will need to stay home, get tested for COVID-19 if they are experiencing symptomsExternal link and only return to school when symptom free.
Please contact the school if your child needs to miss school for any reason, so we can plan continued support for your child’s learning and wellbeing.
